Walter Jones Jr.

Walter Jones Jr. was born October 5, 1953 to Walter Jones Sr. and Georgia Mae Pettis in Buffalo, New York. Walter was affectionately  nicknamed Speedy by his Maternal grandfather.  He departed this life October 25, 2017.

Walter was raised to know and love the lord. He professed Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age. Walter's  love of service started as a Cadet in 1962. He was educated in the Buffalo Public school system. After graduating from high school in 1973, he enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the Navy he pursued the sport of amateur boxing. He courageously served our country including a tour in the Vietnam  War.  He was honorably discharged in 1975 and served 2 years in the reserves. Shortly after returning home he began his career with the Buffalo Fire Department. Walter quickly rose to leadership as one of the top trainers and recruiters at the academy. He had an innate ability to teach and guide others. He served as a mentor and a role model. He orchestrated and assisted in the hiring of minorities in the department. He was very passionate about helping others. Walter had an illustrious 28 years of service, spending most of his years serving in his community at engine #33,2nd platoon. The fire department was his second family. He loved and was committed to his fellow fire fighters. He retired from the Buffalo Fire Department in 2011. To his brothers at Engine # 33. Walter Jones was the original  "Big Dog"
